Yet, once those symptoms pass, you may be faced with a different kind of misery. At times it seems like you are riding an emotional rollercoaster, or you may be suddenly overpowered by feelings you have successfully avoided for many years. Achieving sobriety after struggling with a drug or alcohol addiction is something to celebrate, and leading a sober lifestyle is fun, and more importantly, fulfilling. When I hang out with my “normie” friends, and they have a couple of beers, loosen up a bit and then head home without doing anything crazy, out of control or self-destructive. I look at them and there’s a part of me that envies their ability to put down a drink, to enjoy alcohol responsibly without having it take over their lives. It makes me feel like I am just an out-of-control person.
The Hard Parts of Being Sober
I just told my wife what to think and when to think it. I ignored her frustration with me, and rather, focussed on all the things that made me frustrated about her. Now, I consider her physical and emotional wellbeing before suggesting physical contact. What a waste of my perfectly good perpetual horniness. Now that I don’t drink, I’ve been stripped of my alcohol-induced intelligence and infallibility. That’s why I talked so loud and repeated myself so often.
Changing absolutely nothing else about your life.
First of all, let me preface this by saying that getting and staying sober has been, by far, the best decision that I’ve ever made. There is no doubt in my mind about that. But I’m also going to say something else that might not be what other people in recovery want to put out there, but what I have found in my experience to be completely true. However, once you give up drinking or drugs, your life will change for the better in a multitude of ways.

As someone who genuinely enjoys the flavor of beer, there’s something quite soothing about holding the bottle and tasting something so similar. I understand why some people in recovery don’t mess with non-alcoholic beer. But for me, that’s just where I am in my recovery. Knowing that I have something to mimic “taking the edge” off helps me right now. Some may argue that needing to escape is not truly living a life sobriety. We are all on different, difficult paths.

When you’re sober, you’ll feel sharper and more alert, and you’ll remember things better. It’s easy to down a lot of empty calories with just a few drinks. Combine the calories in alcohol with the aforementioned junk food being sober sucks cravings and you’ve got a recipe for weight gain. When you’re sober, you’ll probably find that you stop gaining weight (and maybe even lose a few pounds) without really trying. This year, I celebrated five years sober.
